Horseback riding is one of Ruidoso's most popular family activities. Stables are located near Grindstone Lake and offer rides past the lake and through the Lincoln National Forest that surrounds Ruidoso. During the winter, enjoy the falling snow in a sleigh ride through the historic Upper Canyon.

FISHING
Fishing shall be permitted at Grindstone Lake with the proper license and in compliance with appropriate state law. Fishing will be allowed from sunrise to sundown on vessels that are lawfully operating on the lake, and from sunrise to 10:00 p.m. on the shore. Fishing shall not be permitted on Grindstone Lake in areas fenced or buoyed around the water intake structure and the water diversion entry point.

Scenic Trail circles the entire lake with picnic tables and benches located along the shoreline.

CALL OF THE WILD
Around here, history jumps out of dusty ole books as you roam the very land Billy the Kid called 'home!' All the magic and mystery and tragedy of the Wild West comes alive in this inspiring land. Visit Fox Cave, reportedly one of Billy's hiding spots as well as for many an Apache warrior - the cave is now home to the Ruidoso River Museum which houses tons of Western and Native memorabilia. Take in the Hubbard Museum of the American West; or be amazed by the dramatic and historical re-enactments at Fort Stanton and the annual re-creation of Billy's infamous excape from the Lincoln County jail.

HIKING BIKING TRAILS
This multi-use natural surface trail, completed in 2014, was designed by the International Mountain Biking Association. The trail system, consisting of 5 trails totaling 18 miles, are open to hiking, mountain bike riding, and horseback. Trails range in difficulty from easy to difficult. Parking is available at Grindstone Lake or at the Disc Golf Course below the dam. Location: Travel up Grindstone Canyon Rd. to Resort Dr. where signs will direct you to Grindstone Lake.
